Ten months ago I began the process of applying for a small grant through Peace Corps to redesign our Language Office. The Language Office (commonly known as PBA) is where all of the foreign language teachers reside during the school day when they aren’t teaching; it also became the place where I held my weekly English Club.
When I first arrived there wasn’t much appealing about the room. It was a simple room with an old bulletin board with faded pictures, an almost-unusable whiteboard, and a large shelf filled with papers better off recycled.
Over the last 2 years we have done projects and collected donated materials that slowly began to create a space of our own. Student traffic began to increase slowly but I wanted to create a fun space for all the students, not just the ones who felt confident in English. So began the official project to make the English Room.
Earlier in the semester I was able to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of English books at various reading levels and topics as well as games. Without another dime spent the amount of students that frequented the room increased by times ten. Almost at any given time there are 20-30 students in the room playing games and flipping through books. We decided to take it to the next level though to create a warm, appealing space that the students would have to go to. Through this grant we were able to buy a projector, screen, books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, book shelves, bean bag chairs, games, art supplies, a white board, a bulletin board, cabinets, and much more. The students are loving their new space!
I am so proud of you Emily!
This has been an amazing journey for you and Julien. To see these pictures, it just helps me process what you’ve been doing for 2 years. You and the beautiful people that have been like family to you, will never forget each other.
I love all the photos but my favorite is the one where the classroom is overflowing with students.
